HTML Encode / Decode
Encode special HTML characters or decode named and numeric character references. Your text is processed in your browser without being sent to a server.
Page views are measured using analytics. Input text and conversion results are excluded. Privacy policy
HTML character references are decoded in a text context.
Ready to encode or decode HTML character references.
Enter any text or HTML character references. Conversion starts only when you select Encode or Decode. Input is not saved automatically.
Copy the result or use it as input for another conversion. Decoded content is shown as text and is never executed.
How to use HTML Encode / Decode
- Paste plain text, HTML source or HTML character references into the input area.
- Select Encode to escape &, <, >, double and single quotes, and backticks. Select Decode to convert named or numeric character references into text.
- Copy the result when you need it. Use result as input lets you switch from encoding to decoding, or the other way around.
Text conversion without executing HTML
Decode runs once in an HTML text context. Named references such as ©, decimal references such as ©, and hexadecimal references such as 😀 are supported. HTML rules for optional semicolons and numeric reference corrections apply. Unknown references stay as text. Tags are not removed or rendered. The result is displayed as plain text and is never executed. Encoding already encoded text escapes its ampersands again. This tool does not sanitize HTML or check whether it is safe to publish.
Limits and data handling
Input is limited to 5 MiB in UTF-8, output to 20 MiB, and processing to 5 seconds. Empty text can also be encoded or decoded. Input and output are not placed in URLs, server logs, analytics events, or browser storage. Page-view analytics and normal page-resource requests remain enabled.
